Divers Searching For Suspected Drowned Teen Jason Vorhees Discover Old CD-RWs Containing 13 Bitcoin At Bottom of Crystal Lake
Volunteer divers working with police from Crystal County, Minnesota looking for suspected teenage drowning victim Jason Vorhees in Crystal Lake over the weekend found something unexpected: Over 13 Bitcoin worth nearly $450,000, according to local law enforcement officials.
Volunteer diver and local SCUBA instructor Haywood Jeffers discovered the sunken treasure when he noticed several manilla envelopes at the bottom of the lake near Collins Cove. The cove is a popular spot for boaters and fisherman in the summer. It also has a reputation for boating accidents and reports of drownings, local officials told the Bugle. That reputation as well as its proximity to Camp Crystal, where the missing teen was reportedly last seen, led officials to search the area.
When Jeffers and local sheriffs deputies opened the envelopes they discovered what they thought were blank CD-RWs. However, after further investigation they realized the CDs contained information used to recover Bitcoin wallets. They quickly recovered the wallets and eventually realized the value of their discovery.
"There is popular meme among Bitcoiners 'I lost my [private] keys in a boating accident' which essentially means they 'lost their Bitcoin' if the government or their crazy ex wife ever come to get their cut", said Sheriff's Deputy Kurt Fox. "I didn't think anyone actually threw their private into the lake until today!" he added. According to Crystal County commissioner Jason Blurp, the county's plan is to sell the Bitcoin and use the proceeds to bolster the county treasury.
